The Zyppy 2026 Google Ranking Factors Expert Survey landed September 9th, and the headline finding is worth sitting with: backlinks ranked second among 131 SEO professionals surveyed, named as a top-three factor by 54.8% of respondents. Content relevance edged it out at 57.1%. Content quality came third at 47.6%. As Cyrus Shepard put it in the report, “the rumor of the death of backlinks has been greatly exaggerated.”

That finding is accurate for traditional Google search. It is also entirely compatible with a different and equally well-documented finding: branded web mentions correlate 0.664 with AI Overview citations, while traditional backlinks correlate 0.218. Same SEO community, same time period, two different retrieval systems producing two meaningfully different signal hierarchies.

The strategic problem for most businesses in 2026 is that they are optimizing entirely for one of these systems while the other grows rapidly. Backlinks drive traditional organic rankings, which still dominate click traffic. Entity signals: brand mentions, structured data, Wikidata presence, third-party corroboration: drive AI citation selection, which is growing as the primary research channel for B2B buyers, healthcare consumers, and local service seekers alike.

A business that builds only links wins traditional search while remaining invisible in AI-generated answers. A business that builds only entity signals earns AI mentions but may struggle to rank organically enough to generate volume. The complete off-site strategy in 2026 is both, built deliberately for both systems, with a clear understanding of what each rewards.

Executive Summary

Here’s what you need to know before diving in:

  • The 2026 Zyppy expert survey of 131 SEO professionals confirmed backlinks as the second most important Google ranking factor at 54.8%: they remain foundational for traditional organic rankings and should not be abandoned
  • But for AI citation selection, the signal hierarchy is different: branded web mentions correlate 0.664 with AI Overview appearances; traditional backlinks correlate 0.218: a gap significant enough to require a separate optimization track (Semrush 2025, cited by Jottler and Digital Applied 2026)
  • Entity authority is the term for the off-site signal layer that AI systems use to verify, recognize, and cite brands: a page with strong keyword optimization and weak entity signals often loses AI citations to a weaker page from a well-recognized entity
  • The four components of entity authority: entity home, Wikidata presence, schema with sameAs connections, and third-party corroboration: are largely buildable alongside traditional link acquisition, not instead of it

Two Retrieval Systems, Two Signal Hierarchies

The Zyppy survey and the AI citation correlation data are not in conflict. They are measuring different systems.

Traditional Google search is a link-weighted ranking system. When a user types a query and Google returns ten blue links, the pages at the top are there partly because of their link profiles: the authority signals that 131 SEO professionals correctly identified as second only to relevance. The system has evolved considerably since its founding, but link equity remains a primary input to ranking because no better external authority signal exists at that scale for traditional web retrieval.

AI-generated answers work differently. When ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google’s AI Mode synthesizes a response that names and cites a brand, it isn’t running a ranking algorithm. It’s doing something closer to what a researcher does: cross-referencing what it knows about the entity across multiple sources to decide whether it can confidently attribute a claim to that brand. Can Google resolve who this entity is? Has it appeared consistently in credible contexts? Can the AI say “according to [Brand Name]” without risk of misattribution?

Links contribute to this assessment indirectly: a well-linked site tends to appear more often in the web content AI systems train on and retrieve from. But what contributes most directly to AI citation confidence are entity signals: the consistency and breadth of brand information across the web, the presence of structured data that clearly defines the brand as an entity, and the volume and quality of third-party mentions in authoritative contexts.

The practical consequence: a site with strong links and weak entity signals ranks well on Google but may be systematically undercited in AI-generated answers. A site with strong entity signals and weak links earns AI mentions but struggles to rank organically enough to drive meaningful volume. Neither half of the strategy is sufficient alone.

“The 2026 ranking factors survey confirmed what experienced practitioners already knew: backlinks still work for traditional search. What it can’t capture is how AI citation selection works, because that’s a different evaluation happening in a different system. The businesses building both simultaneously: link equity for organic, entity authority for AI: are the ones with full-spectrum visibility. Building only one is leaving the other channel to competitors.” – ARC Marketing

What Entity Authority Actually Is

Entity authority is the degree to which search engines and AI systems recognize your brand as a clearly defined, verifiable thing with consistent identity across the web. It is not a score. It is not a metric any standard tool reports. It is the aggregate confidence a retrieval system has that it knows who you are, what you do, and where you exist: and therefore that it can cite you accurately.

The distinction from traditional link-based authority matters: link authority is about how many credible sources point to your content. Entity authority is about how clearly your brand is recognized as a specific entity in the knowledge graph that underlies modern search and AI retrieval.

Google’s Knowledge Graph currently holds more than 500 billion facts about 8 billion entities. AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Gemini all draw on it to resolve entities, verify facts, and decide which brands deserve to be mentioned in generated answers. A brand Google cannot resolve as an entity is a brand its AI systems have limited confidence citing: regardless of how many backlinks it has.

The Four Components of Entity Authority

1. The Entity Home

Your entity home is the page on your website that functions as the canonical definition of your brand. For most businesses this is the About page or homepage, but most fail as entity homes because they are written for human persuasion rather than machine clarity.

An entity home that works for AI recognition is specific and structured. It states your brand name exactly as it should be recognized. It describes what the business does in clear, factual language. It lists the names of key principals with their roles. It includes verifiable credentials, founding date, and location. It links to the primary external platforms where the brand is present.

This is the page your Organization schema’s @id should point to, and it is the page AI systems use as the primary reference when they encounter your brand name and need to resolve what entity it refers to.

2. Wikidata Presence

Wikidata is the structured knowledge base underlying Wikipedia and feeding directly into Google’s Knowledge Graph. A Wikidata entry creates a machine-readable entity record with a unique Q-identifier that Google and AI systems can reference as an authoritative entity anchor.

The Wikipedia notability bar is high. The Wikidata bar is substantially lower: most businesses with documented public existence can create a legitimate entry without meeting Wikipedia’s notability criteria.

A complete Wikidata entry for a business includes: official name (P1448), website URL (P856), founding date (P571), location (P159), industry (P452), and key personnel with their own Wikidata entries linked via the employer property (P108). Each property filled in is a structured fact the Knowledge Graph can traverse and verify.

Most businesses see knowledge panel appearances within 60 to 180 days of completing Wikidata entries, and AI citation lift within 90 to 120 days. Implementation cost: one afternoon.

3. Schema with sameAs Connections

Organization or LocalBusiness schema on your entity home with a complete sameAs array connects your on-site entity definition to your off-site presence. Each URL in the array tells Google: the entity at your site is the same entity described at this external URL.

The sameAs targets that carry the most entity recognition weight: Google Business Profile, LinkedIn company page, Wikidata Q-identifier URL, Crunchbase (for B2B companies), Facebook business page, BBB listing, and the primary industry directory most relevant to your category.

Ten accurate, authoritative sameAs connections are worth more than fifty directory listings from low-authority platforms. The array is not a place to list every directory you appear in. It is a place to list the corroborating sources that establish your entity identity with confidence.

4. Third-Party Corroboration

Third-party corroboration is where entity authority intersects with traditional digital PR: and where it most directly moves AI citation frequency. AI systems are 6.5 times more likely to cite a brand through third-party sources than from its own website alone. Self-description is weak evidence. Corroboration from sources the Knowledge Graph already trusts is strong evidence.

The third-party sources that produce the strongest entity corroboration:

Industry publications and trade press. A mention in an authoritative industry publication carries more entity corroboration weight than 20 directory listings, because the Knowledge Graph assigns source authority by domain credibility. Getting your brand mentioned in recognized publications in your vertical, with or without a link, is the highest-impact entity corroboration activity.

Reddit. Reddit appears in over 5% of AI responses across verticals. For brands targeting audiences active in relevant subreddits, authentic community participation that produces brand mentions is a high-ROI entity corroboration channel. A dedicated community manager spending 10 hours per week on genuine participation in 8 to 15 relevant subreddits is one of the highest-ROI GEO investments for businesses without a large PR budget.

Authoritative directory listings. Yelp, BBB, Angi, Healthgrades, Avvo, G2, and Capterra depending on your industry are sources AI systems already treat as authoritative. Complete, accurate profiles on these platforms contribute entity corroboration signals that owned content cannot replicate.

Podcast appearances and speaking mentions. When a credible voice in your industry names your brand in a talk or interview, that mention appears in transcripts and summaries that AI systems crawl. Named expert appearances are entity signals even without links.

The Zyppy survey finding: backlinks at 54.8%, second only to relevance: should inform how you think about link acquisition, not whether to do it.

What should change is the targeting logic. The highest-ROI link building in 2026 produces links from sources that are also entity-corroborating: industry publications, recognized directories, authoritative community platforms. A link from an industry publication does double duty: it contributes to traditional link equity and entity corroboration simultaneously. A link from a content farm or an irrelevant guest post network contributes to neither effectively.

Links from trusted, topically relevant domains with real visitors received some of the highest individual ratings in the Zyppy survey. Spammy backlinks ranked among the strongest negative signals. That finding aligns precisely with where entity authority is built: the same sources that produce genuine topical authority also produce the entity corroboration that AI systems reward. Quality link acquisition and entity building are not competing strategies. They are the same strategy applied to two audiences: the traditional ranking algorithm and the AI citation selection system.

The businesses winning across both channels in 2026 are not choosing between links and entity signals. They are building links from entity-corroborating sources, maintaining complete structured data, establishing Wikidata presence, and investing in the third-party brand mention footprint that makes them recognizable and citable in AI-generated answers. The two tracks compound on each other when built together.

The Measurement Problem (And the Workaround)

Entity authority does not appear in standard SEO dashboards. Ahrefs has no entity authority score. Semrush does not report Wikidata coverage. Google Search Console does not show AI citation frequency.

The measurement workaround most advanced practitioners use:

Manual AI citation sampling. Run your 15 to 20 most important queries through ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Mode monthly. Document citation frequency, position, and how your brand is described. This is the most accurate measure of entity authority outcomes currently available.

Knowledge Panel monitoring. A Google Knowledge Panel for your brand name is a reliable signal that Google has resolved your entity with sufficient confidence. Track panel appearance and the accuracy of displayed information through periodic branded searches.

Brand mention tracking. Tools like Brand24, Mention, or Ahrefs Alerts track brand mentions across the web. The volume and source authority of mentions are the input metrics for the corroboration component.

Share of voice in AI responses. Tracking what percentage of AI answers for your category queries include your brand versus competitors is the entity authority equivalent of organic market share tracking. Tools like Profound and Otterly.ai automate this at scale.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Zyppy survey says backlinks are #2. Should I still prioritize links?

Yes: for traditional organic rankings, backlinks remain the second most important factor according to 131 expert SEO practitioners. The strategic adjustment is in targeting: prioritize links from topically relevant, authoritative sources that also function as entity corroboration. Those links do double duty for both ranking systems. Deprioritize low-authority, non-relevant sources that contribute neither ranking equity nor entity signals.

Can I build entity authority without a Wikipedia article?

Yes. Wikipedia requires demonstrated notability that most businesses don’t meet. Wikidata has a significantly lower bar and accepts entries for any business with verifiable public existence. A complete Wikidata entry with every available property creates a machine-readable entity anchor that feeds directly into Google’s Knowledge Graph. The absence of a Wikipedia article does not prevent entity recognition.

How do I know if entity authority is working?

The clearest leading indicator is a Google Knowledge Panel appearing for branded searches, typically within 60 to 180 days of Wikidata entry creation and complete sameAs schema implementation. AI citation frequency: measured through monthly manual prompt testing: is the lagging indicator that reflects entity authority’s effect on AI recommendation systems. Rising citation frequency across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini for your core queries is the outcome the strategy is building toward.

How long does it take to build meaningful entity authority?

The structured data components (entity home, schema, sameAs) produce entity recognition improvement within weeks. Wikidata entries produce knowledge panel appearance within 60 to 180 days. Third-party corroboration compounds over a longer horizon of 6 to 12 months as brand mentions accumulate in authoritative contexts. A comprehensive entity authority program typically becomes measurable in AI citation tracking at the 90 to 180 day mark.
